Best credit cards of September 2026

Eight cards, one comparison, no guesswork., We list the ongoing APR, intro APR, annual fee, rewards and welcome bonus each issuer publishes, so you can see what a card actually costs before you spend a hard inquiry on it. The best card depends on one question: are you chasing rewards, or trying to stop paying interest?

Our take
The most complete no-fee card on this page. A $200 bonus for $500 of spending is the easiest threshold here, the 5% rotating categories reach $1,500 a quarter, and the 3% on dining and drugstores runs all year without activation. The catch is the calendar: forget to activate and you earn 1%. Chase has also told cardholders the 3% foreign transaction fee disappears on September 20, 2026, which removes the card's main weakness for travelers.

Our take
If your spending piles into one or two narrow buckets, this beats every rotating-category card, because you choose the buckets. Utilities, streaming and home utility bills are all on the list, and the 5% runs to $2,000 a quarter rather than $1,500. It asks more of you than any other card here: two 5% picks plus one 2% pick, re-selected every quarter, three business days before they take effect.

Our take
Nothing to activate, nothing to track, 1.5% on every purchase. Whether it belongs in your wallet comes down to one number: if you keep $20,000 or more with Bank of America or Merrill, Preferred Rewards adds 25% to 75% on top, and the Platinum Honors tier lands past 2.6%, which is excellent for a flat-rate card with no fee. Without that relationship, plenty of 2% cards do better. The 3% foreign transaction fee rules it out abroad.

Our take
Six uncapped 3x categories on a card that costs nothing to hold is the widest bonus coverage on this page. Add no foreign transaction fee, up to $600 of cell phone protection with a $25 deductible, and rental car coverage, and it works as a single do-everything card. The 12-month intro APR is shorter than what the cash-back cards offer, so this is a card for earning rather than for carrying a balance.

Our take
This card does one job and does it better than almost anything on the market: 21 months without interest on both purchases and transfers. Someone carrying $6,000 at 24% pays roughly $1,400 a year in interest, and no cash back card offsets that. The 5% transfer fee is real, so run the math against what you are paying now. Once the balance hits zero the card earns nothing, and most people move their spending elsewhere and keep it open for credit history.

Our take
The cleanest credit-builder available. You move money from checking into a secured balance, spend only that, and Chime reports to all three bureaus. No annual fee, no late fee and no interest, because the card structurally cannot carry a balance. That design removes the trap most first cards set. The requirement is a Chime checking account, and the 5% cash back needs qualifying direct deposit, so treat that as a bonus rather than the reason to apply.

Our take
The whole case rests on the United Club membership, which costs up to $750 a year to buy outright, so the $695 fee is cheaper than the lounge alone. Free first and second checked bags, priority boarding, 1,500 bonus PQP a year and IHG Platinum status round it out. Two 2026 changes matter: the fee jumped from $525, and guest access dropped to one adult plus dependent children under 18 unless you hold All Access. Fly United a handful of times a year and it pays; otherwise nothing here justifies the price.

Our take
A Canadian card in Canadian dollars, included for readers who bank in Canada. The free first checked bag on Air Canada extends to as many as eight companions on the same booking, which pays the CA$139 fee back in two family trips. Thirteen insurance coverages and a NEXUS fee credit add real value, and the fee is rebated in year one. Two limits: the earn rate tops out at 1.5 points per dollar, which is low for a premium travel card, and there is no lounge access at this tier.
