Wells Fargo Reflect Card Review

Twenty-one months without interest on purchases and transfers, one of the longest windows any major issuer offers. It earns nothing, and that is the point.

We review cards on the terms issuers publish: APR, fees, rewards and eligibility. We do not accept payment for a favorable review.

The verdict

This card is hired for one job. Someone carrying $6,000 at 24% pays roughly $1,400 a year in interest, and no amount of cash back offsets that. Twenty-one months of breathing room on both purchases and transfers, with no annual fee, is the cleanest way to stop the bleeding. Once the balance is gone, the card has little reason to be in your wallet beyond credit history.Jump to:Full review

Full review

Twenty-one months is close to the ceiling of what any issuer offers, and unusually the window covers purchases and balance transfers equally. Most long 0% cards give you a long transfer window and a short purchase window, or the reverse. Here you can move a balance and finance a new expense on the same runway.

Do the arithmetic before you apply, because the transfer fee is not small. Moving $5,250 becomes about $5,512 after the 5% fee, and paying roughly $263 a month clears it inside the intro period with no interest. Against a card charging 24%, that fee pays for itself within the first couple of months. Against a small balance you could clear in six months anyway, it may not.

The fine print catches people in two places. Transfers only get the intro rate if they post within 120 days of opening, and balances from other Wells Fargo accounts cannot be moved here at all. It is also worth being honest about the card's second act: it earns nothing, so most people shift their spending elsewhere once the balance is clear and keep the account open for the credit history.

Frequently asked questions

When does the 21 months start?
At account opening, not at your first purchase or transfer. Every week you wait to move a balance is a week off the runway.
How much is the transfer fee?
5% of the amount moved, with a $5 minimum, added to the transferred balance. Compare it against the interest you are paying now.
Can I transfer a balance from another Wells Fargo card?
No. Balances from other Wells Fargo accounts are not eligible.
